Here is a list of the various roofing materials that are commonly available.

Composition shingles are a good choice when budget is a factor.

Advantages –

  • Asphalt or fiberglass shingles offer a durable option and may be available with recycled content.
  • Wide selection of colors and styles
  • Lower cost than Metal or Tile
  • Easy to install and very versatile
  • Low maintenance
  • Fire resistant

Disadvantages – 

  • Shorter lifespan than tile or metal roofing
  • Flat appearance reduces design flexibilty and final “look”
  • Easily damaged by high winds

Wood shake shingle offer a natural look with a lot of variation in roof line appearance. 

Advantages –

  • Good insulation factor
  • Unique appearance
  • Healthy “air circulation”

Disadvantages –

  • Maintenance issues can be demanding
  • Rot, mold and insect infestation can become a concern 
  • Mid-range price point make other choices such as metal an easier choice.
  • Difficult installation

Roofing tile shingles are a good choice when it matches the design of your home.

Advantages –

  • Very high lifespan expectancy
  • Great for very hot climates
  • Fire resistant
  • Variety of color and patterns to choose among

Disadvantages –

  • Very heavy material requiring specific structure of roof design
  • Seldom installed over existing roofing material
  • Possible color fade over time
  • Easily broken if walked on 
  • High price

Slate shingles are an expensive choice but offer a very natural look and are used on many upscale homes

Advantages –

  • Very long lifespan
  • Fire resistant
  • Low maintenance

Disadvantages – 

  • Very heavy roofing material
  • Easily broken if walked on
  • Difficult to repair

Metal roofing is becoming a very popular choice.  First used in the late 1700’s copper and zinc were commonly used.

Advantages –

  • Popular standing-seam panels design
  • Distinctive look with strong lines to accentuate roof lines
  • Adaptability to mimic different roofing materials – tiles or wood shakes
  • Long lifespan
  • Fire resistant

Disadvantages –

  • Difficult installation process
  • Higher initial cost than other roofing material
